Organic Solar Cells

Organic photovoltaics (OPV) is an integral part of organic electronics along with organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) and organic field-effect transistors (OFET). Its outstanding potential compared to silicon-based electronics is the low production cost through simple printing processes and mechanical flexibility.

Organic solar cells are developed at the FMF on the basis of polymer and molecular photoabsorbers, which are deposited from solutions on glass or foil substrates. Thereby the focus is on cost-effective and industrially feasible production. Installations for blade and dye coating as well as screen printing are available to implement the developed cell architectures on large areas. A roll-to-roll coating system enables semi-continuous production of large-area OPV modules on a pilot scale.

This work takes place in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE.

Selected research goals are:

  • Optimization of organic solar cells by varying photoactive and charge carrier selective layers as well as electrode    systems
  • Development of ITO-free cell and module architectures
  • Cost-effective and industrially feasible module architectures
  • Scaling from optimized solar cells to roll-to-roll PV modules
  • Optoelectric simulation of organic solar cells
  • In-depth characterization of optical and electronic properties by transient and steady state methods such as photoluminescence, CELIV, TDCF
  • Aging tests by heat, continuous lighting and outdoor exposure
