III. Collection of personal data

We generally take the privacy of users very seriously and only collect data that are necessary for ensuring the functionality and usability of the website.

Personal data are collected as follows:

1. Provision of the website and creation of log files

a. Description and scope of data processing

Every time our website is accessed, our system automatically collects data and information.

The following data are collected:

(1) information on the browser type and the version used

(2) the user’s operating system

(3) the user’s Internet service provider

(4) the user’s IP address (anonymized)

(5) date and time of access

(6) websites from which the user’s system accesses our website

(7) websites accessed by the user’s system via our website

The data are stored in our system’s log files. The IP addresses of users are stored in an anonymized form.

These data are stored separately from other personal data of the user.

b. Legal basis for data processing

The legal basis for temporarily storing the data is Art. 6 paragraph 1 (f) GDPR.

c. Purpose of data processing

The processing of the log files serves to ensure the functionality of the website.

These purposes also constitute our legitimate interest in data processing according to Art. 6 paragraph 1 (f) GDPR.

d. Duration of storage

The data are deleted as soon as the respective session has ended.

e. Right to object and deletion of data

The collection of data for the provision of the website and the storage of data in log files is absolutely essential for the operation of the website. Consequently, the user has no possibility to object.

 

2. Use of cookies

a. Description and scope of data processing

Our website uses cookies. Cookies are text files stored in the Internet browser or by the Internet browser on the user’s computer system. If a user accesses a website, a cookie can be stored in the user’s operating system. The cookie contains a characteristic string that enables a clear identification of the browser when the website is accessed again.

We use cookies to ensure the functionality of our website. Some elements on our website require that the accessing browser can be identified after the user has switched to another website.

b. Legal basis for data processing

The legal basis for processing personal data by using necessary cookies within the meaning of section 25 subsection 2 of the telecommunications telemedia data protection act (Telekommunikation-Telemedien-Datenschutz-Gesetz, TTDSG) is Art. 6 paragraph 1 (f) GDPR.

c. Purpose of data processing

The purpose of using cookies that are required for technical reasons is to allow users to use the website. Some features of our website cannot be offered without the use of cookies. For these features it is necessary that the browser is identified even after the user switched to another website.

The purposes of the respective cookies used on our website are provided in the table under 2.a. (“Purpose”).

These purposes also constitute our legitimate interest in data processing according to Art. 6 paragraph 1 (f) GDPR.

The user data collected by cookies that are required for technical reasons are not used to generate user profiles.

d. Duration of storage, right to object and deletion of data

Cookies are stored on the user’s computer and transmitted to our website. Consequently, the user has full control over the use of cookies. By changing the settings in your Internet browser, you can deactivate or restrict the storage of cookies. You can also delete cookies which have been stored at any time. This can also be done automatically. If you deactivate cookies for our website, you may no longer be able to use the site’s full range of features.

IV. Rights of the data subject

If your personal data are being processed, you are a data subject within the meaning of the GDPR and have the following rights vis-à-vis the controller:

You have the right to obtain information about your data stored by the controller and the right to have false data rectified.

You also have the right to erasure, the right to restriction of processing and the right to object to the processing.

In order to assert these rights, please send an email to datenschutzbeauftragter@uni-freiburg.de.

You have the right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority if you are of the opinion that the processing of your personal data infringes data protection regulations. Such a supervisory authority is, for example, the commissioner for data protection and freedom of information of Baden-Württemberg (Landesbeauftragte*r für den Datenschutz und die Informationsfreiheit Baden-Württemberg).
